Smart Selector and the shopper journey

Understand the observable steps, eligibility rules, local body inputs, and the result shown to shoppers.

Smart Selector guides a shopper from a small set of familiar details to product-specific size guidance. It evaluates the assigned chart in the shopper’s browser and does not expose the recommendation formula.

The normal journey#

The visible flow is:

  1. Details — sex and birth year.
  2. Size — height and weight.
  3. Shape — relevant body areas, only when the chart requires them.
  4. Result — the recommended size, an alternative when appropriate, and fit context.

The Shape step is conditional. A chart focused on one supported body area can ask only the question needed for that product. The current journey has no universal manual-measurement step.

Product and chart eligibility#

Smart Selector starts from the chart that resolves for the current product. The chart must be Published, assigned, and compatible with the Smart measurement contract.

Supported body areas are derived from relevant measurement meanings in the table, including chest or bust, waist or abdomen, and hip or seat concepts. If the chart does not contain the required structure, Radiant shows the full table instead of manufacturing a recommendation.

What the shopper provides#

Depending on the chart, the active experience can use:

  • sex;
  • birth year, used to derive age;
  • height;
  • weight;
  • one or more relevant body-shape selections.

The inputs are used for the active calculation in the browser. They are not written into Radiant Analytics or plan-usage records.

What the shopper receives#

The result can include:

  • a recommended size;
  • an alternative size when the chart supports one;
  • fit detail tied to the relevant measurements;
  • the selected unit system;
  • access to the complete size table.

The recommendation is guidance, not a guarantee or probability of fit. Product construction, fabric, styling preference, and the source chart still matter.

Result memory#

When the merchant enables result memory and Shopify permits preference processing, the browser can remember the completed outcome for the same store and chart. The available duration can be the current visit, 1 day, 7 days, or 30 days.

The remembered result can include the recommended and alternative sizes, fit detail, and unit system. It does not include height, weight, birth year, body-shape answers, or calculated measurements.

If Shopify denies preference processing, the result is not written to persistent storage. If the privacy service is unavailable, Radiant uses only a current-visit session result.

Merchant checklist#

Before enabling Smart Selector broadly:

  1. verify the chart ranges and units;
  2. confirm the product resolves to the intended chart;
  3. complete the journey with representative test profiles;
  4. compare the result with the chart ranges;
  5. review the full table fallback;
  6. test mobile and keyboard behavior;
  7. confirm the storefront privacy notice matches the settings.

When the table appears instead#

Table-only behavior is expected when:

  • the chart is not Smart-compatible;
  • supported measurement columns are missing or incomplete;
  • Smart access is unavailable under the active plan;
  • the merchant intentionally uses a table-only guide.

When the monthly Smart allowance is reached, the journey shows that Smart size recommendations are temporarily unavailable and offers View size table. It does not silently convert the complete journey into a table-only chart.

The full table remains a valid shopper experience. Do not alter measurement labels solely to force Smart eligibility.
